Rabbi Löw and the Golem: The Story That Began in Moravia

The lecture will introduce the personality of Rabbi Yehuda Levy ben Bezalel (c. 1525-1609), known as the Maharal or Rabbi Löw, one of the most important Jewish thinkers associated with the Czech lands. Although in the wider consciousness he is mainly associated with Prague and the literary legend of the Golem, a significant part of his life is connected with Moravia, where he served as Moravian regional rabbi from 1553-1573 and significantly influenced the organisation of Jewish communities and the development of Jewish education. The lecture by historian Dana Vedra will focus on his Moravian activities, intellectual contributions and the origin of the legend of the Golem, which became associated with his personality only in later times.
