Edvard Beneš has been dead for more than three quarters of a century, yet he remains a subject of Czech debate and controversy like no other Czech politician. He was instrumental in the establishment of the first Czechoslovak state, but he also twice played a role in the demise of democracy in this country. Will we argue endlessly about whether a state with so many minorities was viable, whether we should have defended ourselves instead of Munich, whether it was right to expel the Germans, whether it was right to orient the state towards the Soviet Union instead of the West? Pavel Kosatik's new book is aimed at the general public. The author believes that we can get rid of the traumas associated with Benes' name, not repeat the mistakes of the past and create a better relationship to the state than we have inherited - and therefore he tries to create a new view of Benes without prejudice. Accept our invitation to a debate between historian Táňa Klementová and Pavel Kosatík. The evening will include a staged reading from the book performed by actor Jáchym Sůra with musical accompaniment. The book will be available for purchase on the spot. The programme is held in cooperation with the Meeting Brno festival and the Moravian Library.
Venue: conference hall of the Moravian Library, Kounicova 65a.
